Lucid Dreaming Methods

I'm hoping to learn about how people who don't "just have" lucid dreams without even trying (darn you!), manage to induce them. I mean, is there something you do specifically before going to bed?

I probably have my best luck with just making myself as aware as possible throughout the day of my dreams. Doing reality checks ("Is this a dream? Why not?") and affirming that I'll lucid dream tonight when I think to do it. But it just seems like there is something missing. I really want to get a dream mask just to support my efforts...prompt me as I am actually in the act of dreaming so that I "get it". I haven't found one that seems good yet. So until something better comes out in that regard, I and many others in this forum would love to hear what works for people! Thanks in advance!!

You might consider using some audio technology to set your brain up for lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is a "skill set" and as with any skill anyone can learn it and a life time devoted to refinement/improvement. Binaural beat brain wave entrainment CDs with a pronounced Theta wave component work quite well. Over the years, I have learned protocols for “pure” (non-assistive) lucid dreaming from several sources inclusive of the Apache people and the Hakka. All the approaches work … more a matter of personal preference than anything else I suppose.

I'm a bit confused regarding your "reality check" strategy as I find such a direct, conscious practice counter to authentic lucid dreaming. As for relying on a prompt to verify/confirm your won experiences, that too, is counter to lucid dreaming. Perhaps it is simply a matter of nomenclature or it could be that we are working from disparate conceptual platforms.
